Spanish Curriculum & Instruction
Lacy’s Spanish program is made possible through the financial support of the Lacy Foundation. Weekly instruction is provided for grades 2-5 by Clare Dorn. Additionally, Spanish Club at Lacy provides instruction before school to students in grades K-1.
Mrs. Dorn is excited to lead the Spanish program and provide further enrichment and cultural activities as part of weekly lessons. The Spanish curriculum at Lacy is based on the information stated in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for elementary students and the World Language Essential Standards for Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES). Lacy also provides a FLEX program, which stands for "Foreign Language Exploratory" program. The goal of Lacy’s Spanish program is to lay the foundation for future interest and proficiency in language study in Middle and High School. Mrs. Dorn will focus on introducing basic vocabulary and listening skills as well as teaching students about Hispanic culture. Most importantly, she will encourage the students to engage in communication and oral conversation with their instructors and their fellow classmates.
Mrs. Dorn has met with the Spanish teachers at Martin and Daniels Middle Schools to determine how to most effectively prepare her students. As a result, one of the program’s goals is to focus on getting the children comfortable speaking Spanish.
Many parents have asked how they can support the program at home. It would help if parents asked their children about Spanish class every week. Not only does this demonstrate to the students that the Spanish program is important, but it helps reinforce learned material when the students "retell" it. Parents and students can also use the links under Resources to practice vocabulary. Your active support of the Spanish program at Lacy will contribute to its success.
